American Corner (AC) Lamu hosted an event on October 28, introducing youth in the area to the Mandela Washington Fellowship, a program under U.S. President Barack Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). The initiative involves young leaders from across Africa studying from 4-6 weeks at institutions of higher learning in the United States.

AC Lamu Coordinator Fatma Ali Busaidy welcomed over 50 young leaders to the event encouraging them to visit AC Lamu for free internet services and resources to apply for the Fellowship. 2014 YALI Fellow Ali Ahmed Walid spoke at the event, sharing experiences and challenges he faced during his time in the United States. He noted the climax of the program included meeting President Obama, and he answered many questions from the youth, urging them to apply before the deadline of November 5.
