Ambassador Robert F. Godec recently visited Garissa, meeting with Government officials including Garissa County Governor Nathif Adem Jama, County Commissioner James Kianda and Northeast County Commissioner Ambassador Mohamud Saleh and discussing a wide range of issues from the security situation in Garissa, Countering Violent Extremism and the upcoming Kenyan elections.
Ambassador Godec visited the USAID-funded Kenya Youth Employment and skills (K-YES) program at the Garissa Vocational Center where he congratulated students for learning new skills towards greater economic opportunities for themselves and their families. Ambassador Godec discussed the unique challenges facing women in the area with local women leaders. Voter Registration for Kenya’s August 2017 elections at two locations. Ambassador Godec rounded out the day with a visit to Garissa University College where he paid tribute to the victims of the Al-Shabaab attack in 2015. Ambassador Godec met with current students and staff, planted a tree as a dedication to the victims, and reiterated the United States stands with Kenya in the fight against terrorism
