Ambassador Speaks at Conference on Countering Violent Extremism in Kenya

U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Robert F. Godec commended the Government of Kenya for their strong efforts to combat violent extremism at the First National Conference on Security and Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) in Kenya, which took place in Nairobi January 14 to 16.  The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) partnered with USAID, the United Nations Development Program, and the Canadian High Commission to organize the conference.  Community leaders, government officials, local experts and development partners came together to develop ways to respond to growing insecurity and threats posed by violent extremism.  Selected local partners also showcased successful CVE efforts.  Ambassador Godec encouraged the Government of Kenya and conference attendees to continue working together for solutions.  By advancing shared responsibility towards a peaceful society, the conference intended to provide a learning and information-sharing platform for religious leaders, public and private sector leaders, and youth to work together on addressing growing concerns of extremism.
