The American Corner (AC) Nakuru hosted over 500 primary and middle school students on November 22, to hear American author Shel Arensen, a long term resident of Kenya, speak about his life and work. He spoke about his children’s books published by Word Alive, a Kenyan Press.
The Rugendo Rhino Book series focuses on problem solving activities by children built around themes of multiculturalism, tolerance, and respect for others. AC Coordinator Angella Nyamisi emphasized the importance of self-development through poetry, singing, storytelling, reading, drawing and sports. Local artists and performers led the children through skits, poetry contests and songs about the themes presented in the books.
AC Nakuru offers positive programs such as this to counter idleness among youth and encourage young people to explore reading to expand their world view.
