The Nairobi Office of the Acquisitions Division of the Library of Congress was established in 1966 as a regional bibliographic center to acquire and catalog publications of research or historical value in most subjects with special attention to government and non-trade sources. From the eight Eastern African countries in 1966, the office’s region now covers 29 countries or entities South of the Sahara as follows: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mayotte, Mozambique, Namibia, Reunion, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Somalia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The office catalogs monographs and new serial titles, maintains files on newspaper and serial issues and produces the searchable online Quarterly Index to African Periodical Literature with over 38,000 articles indexed and more than 800 new articles added quarterly from approximately 300 scholarly journals published in Africa. Newspapers acquired for the Library are prepared for preservation and shipped to the LC office in New Delhi for microfilming.
As part of the Cooperative Acquisitions Program, the office is authorized to accept deposits from major US major academic and other research libraries to purchase additional copies of the material as acquired for the Library of Congress. More than 30 participating institutions are enrolled in this program including Boston University, Cornell, University of Chicago, Harvard, Michigan State University, New York Public Library, Northwestern, University of Ohio, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, UCLA and Yale.
With a staff of 25, the Nairobi Office also coordinates the activities of 25 part-time Bibliographic Representatives residing in 24 African countries.
