Health Alert for U.S. Citizens
July 11, 2023
Location: Kenya, Countrywide
Event: As of July 11, 2023, Kenya recently confirmed a poliovirus outbreak in the northeastern part of the country. The U.S. Embassy advises all U.S. citizens review their poliovirus vaccinations. Anyone vaccinated against polio in the United States receives an inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) that protects against all types of polioviruses including the one reported from Kenya.
Actions to Take:
- Visit the CDC Travelers Health Page.
- Consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for country health advisories or call CDC at 800-232-4636 or 404-639-3534.
- Child/adolescent (less than 18 years): Those who completed the childhood IPV series are considered fully protected. The child/adolescent vaccination schedule can be found on the CDC website (https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/imz/child-adolescent.html#note-polio) and 4 doses are required to be considered fully vaccinated for polio with the 4th dose at or after 4 years of age.
- Adults (18 years or older): It is recommended that adults fully vaccinated as a child should receive one lifetime IPV booster if they are traveling to or live in an area with increased risk for exposure to poliovirus. The adult vaccination schedule can be found on the CDC website (https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/imz/adult.html)
