Increase in Passport Security Surcharge Fee

Event: The U.S. Department of State is increasing the passport security surcharge from $60 to $80, an increase of $20. The new fee will go into effect on December 27, 2021. The new surcharge incorporates costs associated with passport application processing that support enhanced border security, such as secure book and card materials, passport printers, and compensation associated with passport adjudication, including fraud prevention.
All applicants should be prepared to pay the necessary fees at the time of their appointment. Fees can be paid in Kenyan shillings, U.S. dollars, or by credit card. The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi does not accept M-Pesa or checks. Beginning on December 27, total fees for passport services will be as follows:
- Adult passport renewal – $130
- Minor passport renewal (under 16 years old) – $135
- First time adult passport (minors over 16) – $165
- Replacement for lost or stolen passport – $165
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad and first U.S. passport – $235

Actions to Take: We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Kenya enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy or nearest U.S. Consulate to contact you in an emergency.
