Security in Somalia

The U.S. Mission to Somalia reminds U.S. citizens of the U.S. government’s recommendation to avoid all travel to Somalia. The security situation in Somalia remains unstable and dangerous. Terrorist operatives and armed groups in Somalia continue to attack Somali authorities, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and other non-military targets. Threats to U.S. citizens and other foreign nationals can occur in any region of Somalia; however, there is a particular threat to foreigners in places where large crowds gather and Westerners frequent, including airports, government buildings, and shopping areas. Munitions caches and unexploded ordinances exist in various parts of the country and may be volatile.

Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.
