Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Limited Consular Services

On August 9, most major population centers in Kenya appear largely calm following the August 8 general election. Due to possible transportation disruptions, however, routine consular services may be limited. Emergency consular services for U.S. citizens will continue to be available.

We recommend you exercise caution if on the streets and that you remain off the streets, if possible. Avoid areas of gatherings and demonstrations, and exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of any such events. Rallies, demonstrations, and protests may occur with little notice, and even those intended to be peaceful can escalate into violence. As with all large events, there is also the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors. Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, and monitor local news for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
