U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Robert F. Godec attended the 8th annual Laikipia Highlands Games on September 19, celebrating the event’s goal of promoting peace through sports. The Laikipia Highland Games were created by the Gallmann Memorial Foundation in response to Kenya’s post-election violence of 2007-2008.
Every year, various tribes including Pokot, Samburu, Kikuyu, Kalenjin, come together to compete in traditional and modern sporting events. The games merge the fundamental values of sport in fostering good will and bridging divisions, together with the natural competitive spirit of youth, to engage in peaceful competitions that put fitness to the test. For many young or emerging athletes, the Laikipia Highland Games are opportunities to be recognized.
Many Heads of Foreign Missions attended the games, as well as Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and the Arts Hassan Wario.
