U.S. Embassy Nairobi Community Members Participate in the Run with the First Lady in Support for Beyond Zero – Supporting Maternal Health

Over 200 U.S. Embassy Nairobi community members joined the First Lady of Kenya Margaret Kenyatta to race in the inaugural Run with the First Lady Half Marathon on March 9, held in Nairobi.  By organizing and running in the half marathon, the First Lady hopes to raise awareness and bring improvements to maternal health.  In January 2014, Ms. Kenyatta launched the Beyond Zero Campaign, which will bring prenatal and postnatal medical treatment to women and children in Kenya.  The new initiative also aims to accelerate the national plan’s implementation of eliminating new HIV infections among children.

“I am deeply saddened by the fact that women and children in our country die from causes that can be avoided. It doesn’t have to be this way,” said Ms. Kenyatta.

Through the Run with the First Lady Half Marathon and the London Marathon, for which Ms. Kenyatta is training, the First Lady hopes to raise money for 47 mobile clinics, one for each county.  By signing up for the race, community members of the U.S. Embassy Nairobi showed their support to advance maternal and child health in Kenya and for using sports to promote health improvements.

The First Lady chose a marathon to raise funds and awareness, explaining “Nothing reflects our resilience and strength as Kenyans more than our marathon running.”
