U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Robert F. Godec, along with other members of U.S. Embassy Nairobi, ran the 16th Annual Safaricom Marathon to support the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy on 27 June.
Almost 1,500 racers from around the world took part in the marathon. The course includes a full marathon of 42 km and a half marathon of 21 km. Elijah Mbogo and Fridah Lodepa were the men and women winners of the marathon this year.
The race uses wildlife conservation as a catalyst to alleviate poverty, reduce conflict, and improve education and livelihood in the rural areas rich in biodiversity. It is run in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and has raised money over the years which has been used to set up development activities for communities living around the conservancy in Isiolo, Meru and Laikipia counties.
